The jurisdiction of the Coastal Division stretches along the entire Flemish coast. Not only the beaches, dunes, and dikes, but also the marinas, and fishing ports of Nieuwpoort, Oostende, Blankenberge and Zeebrugge fall within the scope of the department.

One of the most crucial core tasks is the protection of the population against the forces of the sea, storms surge and flooding. Therefore, it is a top priority to devise a Master Plan for Coastal Safety which is guaranteed to provide adequate protection against the sea.

The Coastal Division builds and maintains the basic infrastructure in the coastal marinas of Nieuwpoort, Ostend, Blankenberge and Zeebrugge. This means that it constructs docks and maintains the correct depth. It erects quay walls and slopes, as well as slipways, jetties and stairs. It maintains the palisades and the hiking and cycling trails.

Our Flemish Hydrography Team maps the sea, the foreshore and the seabed, detects wrecks and locates their position in the navigation channels, carries out depth soundings in the river Scheldt and compiles tide tables, marine charts, current tables and messages for sailors.
