‘DIRECTEUR-GENERAAL WILLEMSPARK’ IN KNOKKE-HEIST

In 2012, the Coastal Division started the renovation of the Directeur-Generaal Willemspark, also referred to as ‘Bosje van Heist’, in Knokke-Heist. The big pond and the trees around it disappeared and were replaced with a large open space with benches. The small pond received a new look with natural banks covered with typical bank vegetation. This pond, too, has an open space around it. A great many paths and stairs were removed, other were renovated and there were also new paths created. To prevent the dunes from getting damaged while crossing towards the beach, dune passages were created. Finally, a large number of the trees were thinned or chopped down in order to create a greater incidence of light.

The municipality of Knokke-Heist, which since June of 2013 has assumed the management of Directeur-Generaal Willemspark, ensured a further recreational and education design.

The park was officially opened on 18 October 2015 in the presence of the minister of Mobility and Public Works, Ben Weyts. The report from the Focus-WTV news can be viewed here (dutch).
