FLOOD MEASURES FOR THE PORT OF OSTEND

In the event of severe storms, the coastal ports today are the points at most risk from flooding. Quays can be lower than sea level, they can be overcome by storm waves and endanger the stability of dams and locks. On the East Bank of the port of Ostend, a storm wall along the Vismijnlaan and Wandelaarskaai protects the area behind, the Vuurtorenwijk and Bredene, against storm surges. In the Autumn of 2014, the construction of a storm wall along the Slijkensesteenweg was also finalised. This work is the start of a wider action to protect Ostend and Bredene from storm damage.
